Will an Adjustable Base Work with My Mattress?

More popular than ever, an adjustable bed base has the power to transform an ordinary mattress into a vehicle for custom positioning and support. But how do you know if your mattress will work with one? Follow the mattress tips below to ensure that your mattress will work with an adjustable base – and you get the tailored, ergonomic comfort you need for nightly bliss.

How to Choose the Best Type of Mattress for an Adjustable Base

The most popular mattress types available on the market today (memory foam, hybrid and innerspring) are often designed to work with adjustable bases – though it's important to pay attention to special features to make sure you're getting the most out of the compatibility.

Adjustable Base Compatible: Memory Foam and Hybrid

Hybrid and memory foam mattresses are made of both coils and foam, and quality hybrid and memory foam mattresses are often adjustable base compatible. To determine the quality of your new hybrid or memory foam mattress, ask the retailer about the model's year, manufacturer's brand and whether or not it comes with an attached or permanent box spring (if it does, it's not adjustable base compatible). And as with memory foam and innerspring, always double-check the manufacturer's recommendations!

Can You Use an Adjustable Base With Any Mattress?

You can use an adjustable base with all-foam and all-latex mattresses. You can use an adjustable base on an innersrping mattress but only if it is a wrapped coil system. Bonnel coils or Verticoil systems will not work with an adjustable base.

Innerspring (with manufacturer's recommendation)

Most quality innerspring mattresses are crafted with coil technology that allows for easy flexibility, allowing for perfect compatibility with an adjustable base. In the few cases, though, where innersprings are not built in moveable layers – and not equipped for adjustable positioning – using an adjustable base can cause damage to your new mattress. Always check the manufacturer's recommendation to see whether or not your mattress is adjustable-base compatible!

Do Adjustable Bases Ruin Mattresses?

An adjustable base is designed to be compatible with a mattress. This means that even though there is more movement and bending, the adjustable base won't cause damage to the mattress. While for certain innerspring mattresses you'll have to check the manufacturer's recommendations on compatibility, all memory foam and latex mattresses, because they are made up of softer layers, can be used with an adjustable base without worry.

Do You Need a Special Mattress for an Adjustable Bed?

No need for a special mattress. If you want to use an adjustable base, all you need is an all-foam, all-latex or a wrapped coil mattress, generally speaking. As long as your mattress fits into one of these categories, you're good to go!
