If you’re looking to create a work-from-home space, you’ll need a writing desk first and foremost. Here are some quick-and-dirty tips to help you find the right desk for you and your space.
- Look for writing desks with the storage that makes the most sense for your work needs. Not everyone’s work-from-home space will look exactly the same. Some of us will need space for filing papers and storing books and notebooks, while others will be better off with just a sleek surface for a computer and keyboard.
- Measure your office chair (if you have one). There’s nothing more annoying than a chair that bumps against the edge of a desk because of off measurements. Check product detail pages for the measurements – and measure your chair at home to make sure the two will be compatible.
- Think about the vibe you want for your work-from-home space. In a home office, or home office corner or “nook,” the desk makes or breaks the space. It’s the functional and aesthetic center point, so choose wisely. For example, if what you do for a living involves more creativity/art/crafting, you’ll probably want it to feel more casual/fun. (On the other hand, you’ll probably want a desk/workspace used for executive duties to feel more professional – especially if you’ll be hosting video conference calls or in-person collaborations!)
Choose the Color of Your Writing Desk Wisely
Just as the color of a room’s walls has a drastic effect on a room’s mood, the color of your writing desk can have a drastic effect on your work mentality. Here are two popular colors used for home offices – both often for entirely opposite reasons.
- Brown: Brown invites a soothing, warm energy and can soften a room’s feel. If you’re worried your workspace feels more ‘corporate’ than homey (and if you want it to feel more homey), brown is the perfect way ‘cozy up’ the feels.
- White: White, on the other hand, is brightening and cool – and can make a space feel crisper and more professional. Incorporate it into your writing desk (or other office element) if you’re worried your space may be lacking a ‘professional’ vibe.
