Tufted sofas are one of the most popular ways to add a touch of defined style to the home – but what exactly are they, and how are they made? Here’s the 411:
- They can be made with buttons or nailheads. Tufted sofas feature buttons – or nailheads – stitched into rows across the upholstery.
- They can feature tufting either “deep” or “regular.” The deeper the tufting, the more “indented” or “grooved” the cushions will look.
They can come in different patterns. Tufting doesn’t have to be – and often is not – limited to straight horizontal rows across the back of the sofa. Patterns can include anything from two simple tufts per seat cushion, to the more complex – like diagonal lines forming little “diamond shapes” in the negative space.
