Twin mattresses — also known as single mattresses — are a natural choice for beds designed for one person, and they are the smallest standard size mattress you can purchase. This means they’re perfect for dorms, apartments and small living spaces where you want to maximize your square footage, while still getting a good night’s sleep. You can also choose an extra-long Twin mattress if you’re over six feet tall and want be sure that your feet don’t dangle off the edge of the bed.
Whether you’re looking for a standard or XL Twin mattress, we have a great selection to choose from to fit Twin bed frames. Select a classic innerspring mattress for soft or firm support, a memory foam bed that will mold to the shape of your body, or a hybrid mattress for a combination of support. Browse our selection by brand or price to narrow your options to the perfect mattress for you.
Twin vs. Full Size Mattresses
A Full mattress — also called a double mattress — can be used to sleep one or two people, and many shoppers consider a full mattress when shopping for a Twin. For most people, however, a Twin mattress is the right choice when shopping for a single sleeper. It’s easier to maneuver into a small bedroom, and its narrower width provides more options when it comes to arranging furniture in your bedroom.
Twin mattresses are also the perfect choice for kids rooms, where they’ll be glad to have extra floorspace to play. If you ever want to host guests who would prefer a larger bed for themselves and/or their partners, you can always push two Twin beds together for a truly luxurious double bed. This combination yields a sleeping area that’s almost as large as a standard King, while giving you the flexibility to have one or two beds in your room.
Tips for Choosing the Right Mattress
To get a sense of which size mattress and bed is right for your space, note the dimensions of each standard mattress below:
- Twin: 39 inches wide x 75 inches long
- Twin XL: 39 inches wide x 80 inches long
- Full: 54 inches wide x 75 inches long
If you plan to use your mattress with a Full bed frame instead of a low-profile metal frame or display platform, be sure to add a few inches to account for the extra room you’ll need for the bed.
In general, babies and young children should sleep on a firm mattress to avoid any risk of injury, while teens and adults can choose a mattress based on personal comfort. Side sleepers tend to prefer a softer mattress, while back sleepers need more support.
